St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPC RAS) and St. Petersburg Academy of Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation intend to develop cooperation in cybercrime countering and professional training of young investigators of the Investigative Committee of Russia. Joint scientific and educational projects with the Academy will be realized under the guidance of experts of the International Center for Digital Forensics (https://indiforce.ru/), earlier established by SPC RAS in St. Petersburg.
The agreement was signed by the SPC RAS Director, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor of RAS, Andrey Ronzhin and Doctor of Law, Acting Rector of the St. Petersburg Academy of IC of the Russian Federation Elena Yemelyanova.
“The signing of this agreement is a strategically important step for us aimed at developing new software and hardware products in digital forensics. The experience of our specialists in digital security and as well as that of employees of St. Petersburg Academy of Investigative Committee in jurisprudence, the disclosure of real crimes will allow for initiating the development of new methods and software products for countering crime,” said Andrey Ronzhin.
Besides, cooperation with St. Petersburg Academy of Investigative Committee is of great interest for SPC RAS the scientists in regard to approbation and application of its advanced research developments.
“Modern life is changing so fast, technologies are developing – this opens up the opportunity for criminals to use more and more sophisticated means at committing crimes, thus, requiring the development and application of fundamentally new methods of counteraction based on scientific advancements in computer science, engineering and technology. Only coordinated legal and information-technical measures, the exchange of knowledge and existing experience in countering crime will allow for significant increasing the effectiveness of our activities, the SPC RAS researchers can possibly assists with”, Elena Yemelyanova explained.
According to the signed document, St. Petersburg Academy of Investigative Committee and SPC RAS will hold joint educational events: seminars, lectures and conferences. Moreover, the Center will be given an opportunity test jointly with the Academy its scientific developments, that can be further used by Russian law enforcement agencies.
In turn, the students and the faculty of St. Petersburg Academy of Investigative Committee will study and work with the real cases of cyber threats, dealt with by experts of the International Center for Digital Criminalistics recently established by SPC RAS in St. Petersburg. Its staff members are experts and researchers who help law enforcement officials and lawyers in Russia and other countries to solve crimes involving the use of digital technologies like: data theft and corruption, violation of the functionality of programs and devices, illegal use of intellectual property.
