At Leningrad Research Computer Center (LRCC) of the USSR Academy of Sciences had been developed one of the country's first global information and computer network, the AcademNetwork “North-West”.
In 1985, LRCC was transformed into Leningrad Institute for Informatics and Automation of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1992 according to the Decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences - into St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences, that turned into the leading domestic research institution in the area of society informatization.
Currently St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences bears the name of St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPC RAS). The major objective of SPC RAS is to integrate resources at transdisciplinary research as aimed at harmonic interaction between scientific – research and industrial societies while solving priority tasks for the Russian North-West region and promoting St. Petersburg in a capacity of the research center of Russia.
